Web-based voice services are still a relatively new field. The industry has so far been populated by small specialists, but is ripe for consolidation, says Authour, an analyst at Inc. of San Francisco. Companies spent $1.12 billion last year on voice-technology hardware, software and services for tasks such as speech recognition, up about 35% from $835 million in 2005, according to Opus.
