Firefox Personal Portal Comes 'Home' to iPhone

Firefox users rejoice; Firefox 'Home' has been approved and is now available for download on the iPhone and other iOS devices.

Even though Apple approved the Opera Browser for use on the iPhone there are technical reasons why a full Firefox browser would not make it onto to the idevice. Think of this as a kind of personal portal instead. In that context it's a very useful and interesting application, connecting the PC and mobile web if users are registered and signed in.

The Home application uses Firefox Weave/Sync to synchronize all users' Firefox bookmarks, history and tabs. It "syncs" what's happening on Firefox browsers on the PC to the iPhone or iPod Touch (or anywhere it's installed). When a bookmark is clicked it uses Safari in the background, but the experience is framed so that it retains Firefox branding. One could use this pretty extensively to get to desired Internet content if it's in history or bookmarks, which can be searched.

Firefox offers a full browser for Nokia and soon Android. RIM is uncertain. It apparently has abandoned a Windows Mobile version.

Home will probably be widely downloaded but Android is the strategic platform for Firefox. Right now Opera and Skyfire are available for Android, in addition to the native Chrome browser.
